Cabinet members took a "field trip" to check out food safety in some restaurants. On this particular occassion it was Boyle's Famouns Corned Beef in Kansas City. According to the report, "the officials are part of a team created by executive order in July to keep unsafe imports out of American homes. Chinese-made toys with lead paint brought the issue to the fore, but the Interagency Working Group on Import Safety also is pursuing a “strategic framework” to put the clamps on questionable foods."
What I found interesting is the preparation the restaurant took in anticipation of their visit: "someone hosed down Boyle’s parking lot and set up a table of coffee, bottled water and doughnuts for reporters." Doughnuts for reporters? That sounds like great food safety!
How about protecting the American public from the harms of high-fat, high-salt, low to no-nutrition level foods that are being served around the country? Are you only concerned with products that could cause harm in the immediate future? What about the harm caused in the long-term? The cost of treating a condition of diarrhea or flu-like symptoms from food poisoning pales in comparison to the costs for treating clogged arteries, heart attacks, Type II diabetes, colon cancer, or a whole host of other conditions that result from years of unhealthy foods.
Let's focus on the dangers of serving unhealthy foods and beverages before we concern ourselves with whether our imported foods are harmful. If we continue to ignore our problems at home and worry about those overseas, we will find ourselves in a lot more trouble in the future.
Bust your diet vices, and choose to live healthy.
