America Shouldn't "Run on Donuts" but a Healthy Diet

I didn't win the office NCAA basketball bracket--I had the most points going into the final game last night and you know the rest of the story. Today, I was watching the final minute of regulation play on Yahoo and much to my surprise the SPORTS minute is sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts with the slogan "America Runs on Dunkin Donuts". WHAT?

They actually have the audacity to claim that the keys to getting things done are:

  1. A "can do" attitude
  2. A quick stop at Dunkin Donuts

Uhmmm, I'm gonna have to say NO to number 2. I agree completely with point #1, a "can do" attitude is important but it isn't everything. And when it comes to diet, weight and Obesity in America, if what Dunkin' Donuts says is true and we are "running on Dunkin's Donuts we are indeed painting a very unhealthy picture.

The problem w/ Dunkin' Donuts thinking is that despite the best and most sincere determined "CAN-DO" attitude;

You can't do much when your arteries are clogged with donuts and you die of a heart attack.

You can't do much when you have little energy because all you fueled your body with was junk at the quick stop at Dunkin' Donuts.

You can't stop the other kids from calling you fat.

You can't stop your spouse from losing interest in your obese body.

You can't wear your favorite size 8 jeans when your mid-section donut of your own is calling for a size 24.

Breaking news from The Center For The Lack of Common Sense:

Five Philadelphia elementary schools replaced sodas with fruit juice. They scaled back snacks and banished candy. They handed out raffle tickets for wise food choices. They spent hours teaching kids, their parents and teachers about good nutrition.

What have they got to show for it?

The number of kids who got fat during the two-year experiment was half the number of kids who got fat in schools that didn’t make those efforts.

So what they learned is that if you teach kids about healthy eating habits and exercise and you make those foods available for them and GET RID of the junk; i.e. Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Snicker's bars (w/ or without caffiene aka Snicker's Charged and it's 60 MG of Caffiene!) that kids lose weight? well knock me over with a feather!

Our world is really messed up. I got this email from a friend the other day:

Corporate America owns chain restaurants. Moms and Pops own smaller restaurants. The restaurants enter into contracts with soda manufacturers who pay out (sometimes large incentive amounts) to the restaurants to procure exclusive soda sales rights. The restaurants sell soda at prices cheaper than milk or even tea in some cases. The restaurants sell soda in larger servings than those accorded other drinks. The restaurants will provide free re-fills for the sodas, but not for the healthier alternatives, i.e. milk. This is especially problematic for parents on a budget.

Thus, their children end of being served larger quantities of the soda for a cheaper price, effectively "habitizing" the children to drink soda in rediculous quantities at an earlier age. My kids were charged $2.50 per glass of milk at a recent lunch. They each had two glasses. That is $20 for milk at lunch. Unlimited soda would have cost $5. The lunch for the four kids cost $24.00, excluding the drinks.

Lunch with soda: $29
Lunch with milk:$44
Tip with soda $6
Tip with milk $9
$35 gross cost of lunch with soda
$53 gross cost of lunch with milk
$18 increase in the cost of a lunch for four kids at a mid range restaurant just to avoid having the kids consume soda. That is an increase of over 50% to avoid having your kids poisoned by soda.

Will Irresponsible Advertising Continue on TV?

This article appeared on MSNBC.com which clearly states to "Skip all Soda", a first step in a well known diet plan -The Vice Busting Diet - due to the high amounts of sugar and therefore calories and the unhealthy nature of those beverages. But with Coca-Cola being one of the biggest corporate advertisers in the world, you find it hard to believe that such a recommendation would be given on the network's website. These are good points in this article, but you don't usually here this one on such a site because they would not want to offend their big money advertisers. To Use Medifast or Not, That is the Question

Those who have read our blog have asked why Medifast is recommended when we make it clear that a healthy diet should be all about natural foods like fruits and vegetables instead of someone else's diet plan. While that is true, people still don't take up the cause to improve their health and do the actions that would bring about a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, with a Medifast plan it is easier to follow the diet that is already organized in the hopes of getting weight loss going. Medifast is a meal plan, not so much a plan for building a healthy lifestyle. So while a healthy lifestyle is the goal, Medifast can at least be a choice that will help you move in that direction. And anything we can help you do that is better than what you're doing now, is going to help you get to where you want to go - weight loss and fitness and better health.

World Health Day - Diet, Fitness, and Healthy Lifestyle Should be the Focus

While you may hear about World Health Day and the focus on such debatable claims like 'global warming' and the challenges faced with a rise in the Earth's temperature, but there are bigger issues at stake. For starters, the health of mankind needs to be mentioned from a diet and fitness level. Although this may sound much less important than trying to eradicate deadly diseases like AIDS or malaria, the fact is that many more diseases will be present and many more lives at stake in years to come, without a focus on a quality food supply. Just because mankind can be fed, doesn't mean that mankind is going to be healthy, only perhaps survive another day. Without wholesome foods grown on good quality soil full of nutrients and trace minerals and the like, the immune systems of all living things could be compromised to the point of making a common cold a common risk of death. Sounds extreme but even HIV positive patients see a great benefit to a very strict diet that enhances their immune system and leaves out processed foods that can deplete its strength.

How is it that food could be the basis for good health for all? Is it the hundreds of nutrients present in whole foods that we don't hear about or aren't talked about? Maybe these healthy sources of nutrition are overshadowed by marketing efforts of the big burger places and soft drink makers. It's not unrealistic to think that society will lose many of the nutrients that are very important to supporting good health and preventing disease much the same way that certain species are now extinct. A healthy diet and lifestyle should be the focus of World Health Day, instead of what citizens are doing that may be raising the temperature of the Earth. Sure we need to make diseases like Malaria and Small Pox obsolete. Anything that we have vaccines for should be practically non-existent with a concerted effort. But the big problem that supercedes these is the foundation of health - diet. What you decide to eat will determine whether or not we, together, the farmers that provide fruits and vegetables will still be in existence in years to come. They won't be needed if they have a product that no one wants. Make the choice to eat more fruits and vegetables. Increase the demand, while decreasing the demand for hamburgers, soft drinks, potato chips, or any other processed foods. The collective choices of the citizens of the planet is what ultimately will decide where the future of the World lies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) was (apparently) founded on this day, and I suppose that's the reason for this day as World Health Day. Maybe a healthy diet day should be started to help increase awareness of what a healthy diet really is. Is it french fries, hot dogs, pizza, soft drinks, cereal (and I don't mean Oatmeal here!), and pastries? Most of the foods offered that have been pre-packaged - that is, already made and can be eaten out of the box or heated - are missing hundreds of important nutrients for supporting your health. There isn't one food or soft drink manufacturer or fast food restaurant that would be behind a World Healthy Diet Day as described. They would lose hundreds of millions of dollars just in one day.

With a healthy diet you can expect weight loss if you need it; you can expect more energy if you seek it; you can expect your IQ to go up if you want it. You may see your income go up, your relationships improve (oh yeah? you don't think your sex life is better with more energy and a slimmer body?), your creative thoughts and productivity as a person may improve. These are all things, and more, that have been noticed by individuals who make the effort to improve their health by changing what they eat. A healthy diet plan is just the beginning to a healthy lifestyle.

If you really want to make World Health Day something to talk about, then give up the top contributors to the overweight and obesity epidemic - soft drinks, fast foods, and any other packaged foods that aren't made with the intent to IMPROVE and SUPPORT your health.

Promoting Medifast - World Health Day Needs a New Diet

You've heard World Health Day is April 7th, or maybe you haven't.

Not many people may because news services may just make this a quick mention that isn't given much airtime or print space. But this blogger's purpose is to try to wake up the world to the real threat of mankind (no, it's not global warming!). That threat is our food supply.

How many people are there on the Earth? How much food is needed to feed them? If you said there isn't a problem with enough food, it's getting the food to people who don't have access to it, then you're only partially right. The problem goes much further than just not getting food to those who need it. You don't see Coca-Cola having a problem getting their product into third-world countries - ok, other than a few political hurdles. You also see a rise in tooth decay, overweight citizens, and an entire gamut of health problems show up within 1 year of soft drink introduction in these countries. Same goes for fast food restaurants (names you know, obviously!)

The food supply is not the issue. The quality of foods and our water supply is the issue. Health problems can be traced to a poor diet - one that is void of fruits and vegetables and filled with high-fructose corn syrup-filled products and fatty foods and processed foods and everything else that's not fruits and vegetables. Even fruits and vegetables are seeing a compromise to their quality, due to poor soil conditions, environmental pollutants, and probably even competition to turn out an inexpensive product so consumers won't be deterred from purchasing them.

So while we have the ability to feed the world - and some reports say many times over every day - we do not have the proper supply of nutrient-rich food to supply the entire population on Earth. A Healthy Lunch part of a Healthy Diet

Lunch is a very important meal - one that needs to keep your metabolism going and provide you the energy for the afternoon stretch. Most people we find not bringing their own lunch to work, but instead buying. In my experience, not only is buying more expensive to you and adds up quickly if you're on a budget, but it's most often compromising to your health, especially when you can better control what you're going to eat when you make your own at home. You can get what you need at the supermarket, prepare it exactly how you like it, and be sure that the fruit and or vegetable that you want is included. And believe me, all of this is going to be cheaper than going somewhere and having someone prepare your sandwich. And if it's not more expensive, then be assured that it is certainly "garbage" that you're eating (i.e. fast food?).

According to Michael Pollan, most of what Americans consume isn't food. He calls it "edible foodlike substances." He also says that the way we consume it is not really eating. It's something we do pretty unconsciously as we work or drive or watch TV. We all know about the U.S. epidemic of obesity and diabetes over the past 25 years, on top of the steady rise of chronic diseases over the past hundred. Paradoxically, this happens just as Americans and the food industry are ever more aware of nutrition. What's going on here? Pollan claims that in the Western diet, good old food has been replaced by nutrients, mom's good advice by nutritional experts, common sense by confusion, and for most, a relatively good diet by a bad and dangerous one. The book in which he makes all these claims and advises us simply to "Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants," has topped the New York Times bestseller list. (from AlterNet.org)

Comments: Bottom line, most of what is offered at supermarkets, sporting events, bowling alleys, quick shops, fast food restaurants, and everywhere that has a shelf with a food item on it, is just not the best nutrition for our health. Start with those items that come from the garden, or the orchard.

Juice Plus+

All health experts recommend a diet with fruits and vegetables across the spectrum of color. Americans do not get enough fruits and vegetables in their diets.

Nearly all fruits and vegetables are low-fat and contain fiber and natural chemicals known as phytonutrients that can help protect against heart disease, cancer and age-related cognitive decline, cataracts and macular degeneration.

Government health experts say that people should get a minimum 7 and as many as 13 servings a day of fresh produce daily. Currently it's estimated that less than 10% of the population fulfils that requirement. As many as 50 percent of Americans don't eat a piece of fruit all day long. Nine servings are optimal for health maintenance for the average adult.

Counting servings may not be adequate if you are missing out on one or more major color categories. Not all members of the fruit and vegetable group are alike.

They have unique properties that provide combinations of substances with unique effects on human biology. Therefore, simply eating nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables will not guarantee that you are eating enough of the different substances needed to stimulate the metabolic pathways of genes in the different organs where fruits and vegetables have their beneficial effects.

The colors represent 25,000 chemicals that are beneficial. There is evidence that interaction between the colors provides benefits, so it's important to have a diverse diet and eat different foods. We normally eat three color groups on average in this country. Heber believes in evolutionary terms, man started out on a plant-based diet.

Fruits and vegetables are historically and biologically important. Our ancestors the hunter-gatherers ate over 800 varieties. The different colors represent families of compounds, and we have even selectively bred the colors we eat into an even narrower range. There are red carrots in India, we eat orange ones. There are 150 varieties of sweet peas, but only a few are available to us. We need to make an extra effort to eat many different foods to get the full range of benefits, he says.  There are seven color categories:



Red Group (tomatoes, juice, pink grapefruit, watermelon)
These contain the carotenoid lycopene, which helps rid the body of free radicals that damage genes. Lycopene seems to protect against prostate cancer as well as heart and lung disease.
