Juice Plus+

All health experts recommend a diet with fruits and vegetables across the spectrum of color. Americans do not get enough fruits and vegetables in their diets.

Nearly all fruits and vegetables are low-fat and contain fiber and natural chemicals known as phytonutrients that can help protect against heart disease, cancer and age-related cognitive decline, cataracts and macular degeneration.

Government health experts say that people should get a minimum 7 and as many as 13 servings a day of fresh produce daily. Currently it's estimated that less than 10% of the population fulfils that requirement. As many as 50 percent of Americans don't eat a piece of fruit all day long. Nine servings are optimal for health maintenance for the average adult.

Counting servings may not be adequate if you are missing out on one or more major color categories. Not all members of the fruit and vegetable group are alike.

They have unique properties that provide combinations of substances with unique effects on human biology. Therefore, simply eating nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables will not guarantee that you are eating enough of the different substances needed to stimulate the metabolic pathways of genes in the different organs where fruits and vegetables have their beneficial effects.

The colors represent 25,000 chemicals that are beneficial. There is evidence that interaction between the colors provides benefits, so it's important to have a diverse diet and eat different foods. We normally eat three color groups on average in this country. Heber believes in evolutionary terms, man started out on a plant-based diet.

Fruits and vegetables are historically and biologically important. Our ancestors the hunter-gatherers ate over 800 varieties. The different colors represent families of compounds, and we have even selectively bred the colors we eat into an even narrower range. There are red carrots in India, we eat orange ones. There are 150 varieties of sweet peas, but only a few are available to us. We need to make an extra effort to eat many different foods to get the full range of benefits, he says.  There are seven color categories:

Red Group (tomatoes, juice, pink grapefruit, watermelon)
These contain the carotenoid lycopene, which helps rid the body of free radicals that damage genes. Lycopene seems to protect against prostate cancer as well as heart and lung disease. Processed juices contain a lot of the beneficial ingredients, but most are high in sodium. Plus one glass of fresh tomato juice can give you 50 percent of the recommended lycopene.

Yellow/Green Group (spinach greens, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, yellow corn, green peas, avocado, honeydew melon)
These are sources of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. These are believed to reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Lutein is a yellow-green substance that concentrates in the back of your eye. It may also reduce atherosclerosis.

Orange Group (carrots, mangos, apricots, cantaloupes, pumpkin, acorn squash, winter squash, sweet potatoes)
These contain alpha carotene, which protects against cancer. They also contain beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. It protects the skin against free-radical damage and helps repair damaged DNA. Beta-carotene is also good for night vision. It's important to note that these beneficial nutrients can be received from other foods, too. For instance vitamin is found in dairy products and meat. But it's not as beneficial because you get high calories and fat along with it.

Orange/Yellow Group (pineapple, orange juice, oranges, tangerines, peaches, papayas, nectarines)
These contain beta cryptothanxin, which helps cells in the body communicate and may help prevent heart disease. Also, an orange contains 170 percent of the recommended daily vitamin C. It's interesting to note that the skin of an orange is high in a protective fat that has been found to kill cancer cells in humans and animals, which highlights the fact that two-thirds of all drugs come from the plant world.

Red/Purple Group (beets, eggplant, purple grapes, red wine, grape juice, prunes, cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, red apples)
These are loaded with powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins believed to protect against heart disease by preventing blood clots. They may also delay the aging of cells in the body. There is some evidence they may help delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Green Group (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, Chinese cabbage or bok choi, kale)
These contain the chemicals sulforaphane and isocyanate and they also contain indoles, all of which help ward off cancer by inhibiting carcinogens. It's a fact that ten percent of the population - like George Bush Sr. - doesn't like broccoli. But it is important in diets because of the beneficial chemicals it contains.

White/Green Group
(leeks, scallions, garlic, onions, celery, pears, white wine, endive, chives)

The onion family contains allicin, which has antitumor properties. Other foods in this group contain antioxidant flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol.

Nutrition Recommendations for Specific Conditions

While most people defer to their doctor's recommendations that usually comes from a prescription pad, for any of the number of ailments that besieges them, there are natural alternatives that at least provide some help, and may even do the job alone. One common condition is high cholesterol. The amount of marketing done by drug companies to push their cholesterol-drugs numbers in the millions. The revenues from these drugs numbers in the Billions - all the while there are natural, healthy solutions available to you. Even a small adjustment in diet and regular exercise is sometimes enough to get cholesterol under control. After all, it is most often a diet high in unhealthy fats that is responsible for an unhealthy rise in levels. Nonetheless, here are some two nutritional recommendations that offers assistance to those with high cholesterol:

  • B vitamins: Niacin (also known as vitamin B3) is the most potent natural drug available to combat bad cholesterol, many doctors say, by reducing 'bad' cholesterol (low-density lipoproteins) and increasing 'good' cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins). Folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 can help keep homocysteine levels (that contribute to anthersclerosis or hardening of the arteries) in check, as well.

  • Weight loss

starts with a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables. Exercise is also an important if you want to get fit for the long haul. When you are at a healthy weight, your life may be a lot better - you can experience more things, have more energy, go to the doctor less, make more money, and even be happier.

    Diet Plan

There are many benefits to getting to a healthy weight, but it all starts with the right weight loss plan. A cup of other vitamins and a tablespoon of apples, all for health. When you start with a diet from a fruit or vegetable, and then you add plenty of other healthy actions, you improve your overall health. If you delay your efforst for a life that includes more fitness and happiness, you may find that you cut your longevity short. But when you delve into a health - like our

    weight loss plan

that is a doctor approved diet plan, this is a healthy choice. A diet and weight loss plan that is endorsed by healthy dieters around the world, you can always lose weight, but are you doing it the healthy way? Oprah's Dr. Mehmet Oz knows that a diet is temporary but a healthy lifestyle with a healthy diet plan in place is for good. A

    Medifast diet

with plenty of nutrients makes your diet plan much easier. When I can't have those healthy and fresh products, I know that I am not going to do my body much good. Because a diet that doesn't include a good balance of the right nutrition will leave me short of my weight loss goals. If you look for other products or pills for losing pounds - don't be confused by all the otherweight loss plans like Medifast that many people are familiar with. Now we also recommend if you are having trouble getting your diet plan situated, and you need some structure provided by someone else, then you consider using Medifast for your meals and snacks. It is a healthy alternative meal plan, although we don't necessarily recommend that you count on making it a permanent fixture in your life. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of a healthy diet and that's what will support your health, and that you won't get from Medifast diet. That is also why we recommend other products to support your diet plan.

  • Garlic: This herb has been called the ultimate herb for preventing heart attack and stroke. Overall, garlic has been showed to lower cholesterol by about 12 percent. How much is enough? From one to two cloves daily, up to 10 cloves ? or as much as your palate and digestion (and friends) can handle.

  • Coupled with regular exercise, and you may just have the 'formula' you need to avoid dangerous drugs that do more damage and cause more problems than the one they're meant to help.

Remember, diet and exercise is the first place to look when it comes to healing, reversing damaged organs and tissues, and actually avoiding sickness and disease.

    Health Includes Vitamins and Minerals

While vitamins and minerals are the foundation for good health, most people do not consume enough each day. One vitamin that is essential for eye health is lutein. The human body is completely unable to produce enough lutein to sustain the eye so it is necessary for you to get this vitamin elsewhere. It is believed that your body needs at least 6mg of lutein each day for optimum eye health. Since it is difficult to get enough lutein in your diet through eating healthy foods, it is important to take lutein supplement. You can go through the manual in the package or bottle to make sure it contains the essential amount of lutein.

Vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-Carotene (pro-Vitamin A) and Carotenoids (Lutein & Zeaxanthin) are strong antioxidants i.e. they protect the eye against free radical damage. It seems reasonable to assume that strengthening of the eye defences by increasing the intake of these vitamins would be helpful in preventing the chronic AgingEye diseases. Recent well designed and controlled studies seem to support this assumption. Lycopene (a different type of carotenoid found in tomatoes) protects against prostate cancer and heart disease - therefore the protective effect of these vitamins is not just restricted to the eye.

Among these are the antioxidant vitamins. The eye, especially the lens and the retina is particularly vulnerable to the effects of unchecked free radicals which are a byproduct of oxygen, cellular processes and environmental contaminants. Antioxidant vitamins help to combat free radicals. The primary antioxidant vitamins include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. in addition to their important action against free radicals they promote healthy cells and tissues in the eye. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two more valuable antioxidants that recent research has found to be especially effective in maintaining the good health of the eyes. read more...

Comments: While a healthy diet includes plenty of vitamin and mineral-rich foods, the fact is that most Americans are deficient of the types of foods that will provide these nutrients, namely fruits and vegetables. There are plenty of reasons that the overall health of a nation will deteriorate over the years, and it's mainly due to a lack of good nutrition. If you'd like to learn about a healthy diet plan, and the way to make weight loss easy, with a plan that allows you to make a transition to a healthy and fit lifestly, visit www.juliahavey.com and learn more. This just may be the best thing considering the habits of most dieters.

    Weigh More, Pay More

The insurance industry doesn't take pre-existing conditions or current health problems, and obesity, lightly when it comes to calculating the premiums for life insurance.  If you want to get life insurance and you're overweight, chances are good that you're going to pay more.  Another added cost in the system we call "health care", although this would be construed as "death" care.  Afterall, life insurance is for those people who live, not the ones who die.

Juice Plus+ is made by juicing 17 different fruits and vegetables into a vitamin supplement all in a capsule form. A cup of other vitamins and a tablespoon of apples, all for health. In regards to insuring a life that includes too much extra weight, I am reminded of the game of Blackjack. When the dealer has an Ace showing, the players are asked if they want to insure their hand, so that if the dealer checks his hole card (the one not showing) and has a 10, the insurance bet will be paid and the player won't lose their initial bet either.  The risk is putting up more money on the bet that the dealer has a 10. BUT, the idea of this Blackjack insurance is only useful when the player has a good hand to begin with, that way if the dealer doesn't have a 10 (which would make his hand 21), then the player has a good chance of beating the dealer.  Afterall, the "insurance" money is lost if the dealer doesn't have a 21.  The point is you don't insure a bad hand, because you could lose both!

I explain this concept because it seems to apply in the similar situation of health.  Would you insure a body that is obese and unhealthy with higher premiums for health or life insurance?  It's a bet that is sure to lose unless you have a healthy body to begin with.  See, dying is inevitable, the same way that the hand against the dealer will have a conclusion, and someone is going to win or lose.  The book on Blackjack says to never take insurance because it doesn't make economic sense in the long run. I have to wonder if insurance of life and health doesn't make sense for those who are unhealthy to begin with.  Wouldn't a better insurance plan be to exercise, eat right, drink pleny of water everyday?  The same way the best insurance plan for Blackjack would be to not play the game at all.  There are better ways to "risk" your money and your health.

Why not take a chance on riding a bike, hiking, climbing, snow skiing, water skiing, jogging, running a marathon, or some other form of exercise that puts your body to the test.  Everything comes with a risk, but what's the upside to the actions listed here?... a healthier heart, lungs, body; more fitness, a better figure?  Probably.

If your health is in need of an overhaul, don't think that having more insurance is the answer.  Better decisions in your life is the answer.  Just some food for thought.

STOP! Before you follow Victoria Beckham's diet...

It caught my eye that Victoria Beckham (former Spice Girl "Posh") had been quoted as saying that she survives on Diet Coke and low-calorie snacks and has for years (Read more...). This strikes me as sad because of the image and example that she sets for millions of young girls around the world who would love to look like and I'm sure at one time be like, her. She states that she hasn't even had water in years because she doesn't like the taste. This has got to be one of the unhealthiest recommendations - the truly unhealthiest would be recommending regular Coke and no water - for a person of her celebrity to be doling out to a public that desires her figure. Don't be fooled by the outside appearance when it comes to being healthy.

But it doesn't stop there. This next point really caught my attention. Something I didn't know about one of her children - and why would I except that it she is in the news enough that you can't help but read a story or two about her and her husband. Her 4 year old has been diagnosed with epilepsy. So I did a little research - and I'm not a scientist, and I am empathetic to those with epilepsy and family members who have children with epilepsy - with the thought that maybe the two had something to do with each other (again, before knowing much at all about epilepsy). My first thought when looking into this was "could drinking Diet Coke all the time, when she was pregnant, and not water be a possible cause of the epilepsy?

What I found is that epilepsy doesn't have one exact cause and the diagnosis can be difficult because there are many types of epilepsy. Here is a basic description:

"Epilepsy is a brain disorder. The neurons fire an abnormally high number of times in a short period. Injury to the brain may certainly cause epilepsy. This includes deprivation of oxygen at birth, trauma to the head at any time of life, and stroke or injury to part of the brain caused by blockage or haemorrhage of one of its blood vessels, or improper brain development."

But could it be possible that Diet Coke with the aspartame, phosphoric acid, and other harmful ingredients contribute to the cause of brain problems - starving the brain of oxygen and proper development (during pregnancy)? Doesn't water contain oxygen? Don't soft drinks dehydrate cells? A possible cause, I'm sure. With all of the possible birth defects that are out there...well, I'll stop there.

Before you run out and follow "Posh's" diet, take a second look at the chemicals and/or poisons that are in many of these foods and drinks and look at the consequences that are possible before deciding to consume them.

If we at least cut down on the number of possible preventable causes, we can more clearly identify some real causes - i.e. genetics. Better to get lots of good nutrition and exercise to look and feel great and have a great quality of life, than to starve yourself into an unhealthy slim figure.
