Will Coca-Cola Stop Advertising on MSNBC?

This article appears on MSNBC.com which clearly states to "Skip all Soda" - a first step in The Vice Busting Diet plan due to the high amounts of sugar and therefore calories and the unhealthy nature of those beverages. But with Coca-Cola being one of the biggest corporate advertisers in the world, you find it hard to believe that such a recommendation would be given on the network's website. These are good points in this article, but you don't usually here this one on such a site because they would not want to offend their big money advertisers. This is why you never see a 'Skip all Fatty Fast Foods" because the biggest fast food restaurant in the would never allow it. Nonetheless, here is an excerpt of the article --

Skip all soda
At roughly 225 calories a pop, a 20-ounce bottle packs nearly the same calories as a chocolate bar but is far less satisfying. Diet soda is no body bargain, either. For every can you sip daily, your risk of becoming overweight rises by 37 percent, researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio found. Other studies hint at why: Regular use of artificial sweeteners may interfere with the body’s ability to estimate calories you’ve ingested, so you eat beyond what you need. Read more...

The survey of nearly 700 office workers in the United States reveals that only one-third (31 percent) of respondents exercise during work hours. In addition, just one-third of respondents have access to fitness equipment provided by their company or work in an environment that promotes fitness. More often, employers do not provide workers with this access; 62 percent of respondents cite not having an appropriate place to exercise at work as the primary reason for not doing so. Full artilcle...

At the same time, 80 percent of workers say that exercise has or would have a positive impact on their well being and 78 percent say that exercise has or would have a positive impact on their overall productivity at work. As the nation battles increasing rates of obesity, an investment in and support of exercise at work may be a wise investment. In fact, eight out of 10 workers that wish their company did provide exercise options say they would use the equipment at least every other day if it were available.

Comments: Many people complain of not having the energy to get out and start exercising. You've heard it before, you don't have the energy NOT to exercise!.  Because exercise will get the heart pumping, the lungs breathing, more freshly oxygenated blood circulating, and help raise the metabolism over time, you just can't afford not to do some form of exercise each day. If you want to improve your mood too, then do whatever it takes - drag yourself to do it! - to go take a brisk walk or get to a gym. Recently, a client of The Health & Wellness Institute started an exercise routine - slowly, but surely - that consisted of 20 minute walks each day. After 2 weeks, a light weight lifting program was introduced. After about six weeks, you wouldn't believe how much her attitude had changed. Not that she was grouchy before, but just excited and delightful about "getting going" each day would be the best way to describe it. This is not a phenomenom, but just a simple physiological change that occurs when exertion takes place beyond the normal movements of the body, and sustained for even a short amount of time. So don't wait if you're thinking about putting some exercise into your daily plan. Make today the day you do it!...and tomorrow!

Reasons to Consider a Vegetarian Diet

This from Alternet.org ---

1. You'll ward off disease. Vegetarian diets are more healthful than the average American diet, particularly in preventing, treating or reversing heart disease and reducing the risk of cancer. A low-fat vegetarian diet is the single most effective way to stop the progression of coronary artery disease or prevent it entirely. More...

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation takes $500 Million bite of the Obesity Pandemic--Will it help?

Dear Robert Wood Johnson Foundation:

I attended the ABC News/Time Magazine ObesitySummit put on by the RWJF in Williamsburg VA a few years ago. I watched as authors/leaders in the field of Obesity sat on a panel discussing dieting and what the solution to Obesity is. Each argued that their diet was the answer; Agaston/SouthBeach, Treager/Atkins, Katz/The Way to Eat, Brownell/Food Fight and Ornish/Vegetarian--the ONLY point that they all agreed on is what is missing from the existing solutions--lifestyle change! Yet not one of their programs emphasizes lifestyle transformation and change.

Each of their books--and every other "diet" book--still has "Day One menu/diet"--they very reason that makes an Obese person fail. The existing approaches attempt to take a person who's daily routine consists of unhealthy foods in excess portion; fast food, soft drinks, candy, cookies and little physical activity to a sticking to a portion controlled 1200 calorie 'diet' of healthful foods and 30 minutes of exercise a day. Too much change, too soon--as illustrated by the attached cartoon I commissioned.

The obese person is excepted to exhibit super-human willpower by immediately changing all of their "vices" simply because it is "Day One" of their "diet". Most can't stick to it. 38% confess to breaking their diets DAILY and another 33% breaking theirs weekly, so we know that 71% of well-intentioned dieteres fall off their diets to consume their beloved fast food, soft drinks, candy, baked goods, etc.

The ONLY way to make an impact on the Obesity Pandemic is to rid people of the control that these diet vices have over their lives.

You respected Dr. David L. Katz, MD enough to have him speak at the summit, it is my hope that you read the review he wrote for my book, The Vice Busting Diet, and then listen to the message contained in the book.

To end the Obesity Pandemic, we MUST help people rid their lives of sugar filled beverages, unhealthy fast food and to get active; or rather Bust the 3 major Vices which contribute to the crisis; Soft Drinks, Fast Food and Television/Sedentary lives. But, we must also help the individual to do so gradually, consistently and permanently if we are to ever see an end to this problem before it is too late and our nation is bankrupt, our people dying well before their time and their quality of life significantly compromised.

Can I get a grant from the RWJF to help people? No. I am not wasting time and money and research looking for a pill, spending money educating women to breast feed nor am I handing out bikes to children who's parents are going to allow them to stay inside and play video games.
I am one lone voice trying to spread the only effective solution and I have to shout pretty loudly if I am to be heard over the millions of dollars spent by McDonald's to assure us that we are "Lovin' it!" or by Coca-Cola to encourage us to "drink, choose and live".

Did you know that Coca-Cola's MyCokeRewards contest is open to 13 year olds and encourages them to drink enough Coke to gain 75 pounds just to win a Rawlin's baseball glove? Or to win "Sing like an Idol" that they heavily promote on American Idol, one would need to drink 2160 12 ounce 12 pk containers, consume 4,000,000 calories and gain around 900 pounds?

I do. www.drinkchooselive.com

You want to make a difference?
Rather than commit $500 million dollars, why not speak out about the reality of drinking Coke? of eating at McDonald's? of spending hours watching TV.

We can end this Pandemic, but it will take making some major corporations change; really change. Not just appear to be the good guys. 2010 for the "voluntary" removal of sugar filled soft drinks from our schools? What about the NEXT time they refill them only adding WATER? NOPE! The American Beverage Association dances around that questions, saying the bottle sizes etc...take time to change, and the schools have to agree, etc. Despite the fact that water is already in most of the machines so that argument doesn't wash. They don't want to remove them, and when they do, they will put Gatorade and "energy" drinks in their place and those are even worse. Not to mention the fact that their aspartame punch/diet soft drinks are going to allowed to be offered to our CHILDREN!

You want to reverse Childhood Obesity? I have just given you two places to start: McDonald's and Coca-Cola.

And, I will join you as your spokesperson in this initiative as a volunteer; saving you $500 MILLION dollars in wasted research, studies and bikes that won't solve the problem nearly as effectively as getting kids off of Coke and Happy Meals!

Childhood Obesity Becoming a Global Concern

How sad it is that there are millions of children in many countries around the world who don't even get one small meal per day and many who might get a few morsels. But it is even more disappointing that there are more children who are getting too many calories and too much food.... too often.

Childhood obesity is becoming a problem around the world and all you have to do is type in Child Obesity in any search engine and you'll find the concern spreading to all corners of the world. If you think about the size of our solar system and relate that to how close a well-fed (actually 'overfed') country is to those that are starving, it seems impossible that everyone on the planet can't get a meal at least twice a day.

But the problem is the spread of calories but not healthy calories like that from fruits, vegetables, fish, etc. Where you see obesity becoming a problem where it wasn't before, you see the growth of fast-food restaurants and soft drinks (which are predominant in those restaurants). It is statistically proven that with the introduction of soft drinks in a country, specific health problems appear that were not present (in any significant way) before.

I was criticized when I brought a lawsuit against Coca-Cola for their ridiculous Drink Choose Live campaign that has only been referred to now as My Coke Rewards, but if those naysayers would look at the bigger picture, the long-term outlook of what is happening as companies continue to push the growth of their high-calorie unhealthy products around the world, they would see that there is no benefit.

Be aware and beware of the repurcussions of letting your children use fast food and/or soft drinks for their drinking or eating pleasure or source of energy. In the long run their health will be compromised. And as my friend Dr. David Katz has said, "There's no reason to think that the current generation of children may not outlive their parents" because of the increase in health problems from a continued decline of a healthy diet.

Choose good nutrition. Choose health. Choose life.

The Environment Diet

I learned something last night reading my daughter's homework assignment. It was for her personal finance class and they had to read an article by sales expert Jeffrey Gitmor titled "The environment you create will dictate your success.”

When I say success environment what do YOU think about? He is NOT referring to the retirement destination of luxury living as a mark of success environment but rather "your surroundings; both mental and physical"

Your mental environment begins with a positive attitude and grows to your acceptance of new things, new people and new ideas -- your mental willingness to see the bright side of everything and your mental ability to turn obstacles into opportunities.

If your environment isn't set up for success, it is YOUR responsibility to make it a better one.
I LOVE this article! Now, like most things in life, it got me thinking about weight loss and how what I just read could apply to our journey. It applies perfectly!

In my book "The Vice Busting Diet" (http://www.vicebustingdiet.com/), I talk about the need to get rid of clutter -- cleaning up your house, finishing projects that are lying around undone, finishing what you start, etc. I can’t tell you how many people write me and ask what that possibly has to do with losing weight and I will tell you what I tell them it has everything to do with it.

If you live in a chaotic environment, your life will be chaotic. If you live in a messy environment, your life will be messy. If you live amongst clutter and unfinished projects, YOU will be just another piece of clutter-filled unfinished junk with a lot of potential but no results. Ouch!

Hey, the truth hurts, but sometimes it’s just the kick in the butt that we need to kick it in gear!So what are the truths we can apply to weight loss?

If I asked you what success meant to you, what would you think of? WRONG! It is NOT reaching a specific measure on the scale, yet that is what universally comes to mind when thinking of a successful weight-loss journey.

How many people, including yourself, do you know who have lost weight, been “successful” on their weight-loss journey reaching their goal weight only to gain it all back and then some? HOW is that success? WHY should we continue to measure our success by the one tool that continually hinders real success? I am talking about the scale and pounds.

The true environment of success for a lasting, successful and healthful weight-loss journey is based on the actions of healthy living! A life that consists of adequate daily water intake, a healthy well-balanced diet, regular exercise, an active schedule and a positive attitude are essential for lasting weight loss. If you bring to your weight-loss journey an old and tired defeatist attitude -- "this isn’t going to work" -- you will be right. If you think that you can keep doing what you have always done, eat what you have always eaten, but in this case somehow realize different results, you are only kidding yourself.

If you think you can get to a predetermined measure on the scale and then revert back to your old habits, you are going to get whiplash as the yo-yo string reels you back to your starting weight.

While a healthy diet is one aspect of this journey, and certainly pounds lost is a goal, who you become along the way is the real measure of success. The real goal should be becoming a person who has a healthy lifestyle, who exhibits healthy actions at all times and embraces health not for pounds lost but for the gains in preventing future illness and disease, for movement, flexibility and stamina, for a zest for living.

That is who you should strive to become and what your new environment should be like.

Heart Attack Grill--nutritional pornography?

OHMIGOD!

OK, do I have your attention? In a recent MSNBC article, I read the nurses are outraged by the "nurse" costumes worn by the staff at the Heart Attack Grill. THAT'S the controversy? The UNIFORMS?

Excuse ME!?

How about the food itself? Just the name should tell you 'stay away!' The article goes on to say, the Heart Attack Grill opened a year ago with a Hooters-like formula of red meat and sexy waitresses. Diners choose from among four cheeseburgers: the Single, Double, Triple and Quadruple Bypass. The Quadruple is a towering monstrosity with four half-pound beef patties, four pieces of cheese and a mound of bacon.

“Essentially, it’s nutritional pornography. It’s so bad for you it’s shocking,” Basso said.

Basso OWNS this place and calls his food "nutritional pornography"? Why nurse costumes, why not have the burger flingers wear undertaker outfits and pass the food out in little coffins? In a day and age where 2.6 MILLION people DIED prematurely last year across the globe because of Obesity and Overweight related causes, do we really need a restaurant peddling sure death and mocking it while they do?

I completely am for clever business ideas and companies making profits, but this just isn't funny and it is a HORRIBLE idea. They even do the extra step and offer wheelchair service to your car after eating their Guadruple Bypass burger! Their motto is "A taste worth DYING for!"--are they serious? They can't be. I swear I am ready to go ballistic on this one!

The only thing I find funny about this is that nurses are upset saying that nursing has too many sexual fantasies connected with it already. Ok, in a day and age where nursing units across the nation hold "Thunder Thigh Thursday" and many nurses are themselves overweight and in poor health--the UNIFORMS are what they are choosing to issue?

My challenge to the nursing profession and those threatening to sue the establishment over the sexy nurse costumes; get a backbone and take a stand on the really important issue! The fact that if people eat this crap, you are going to have more and more patients dying on your watch from Obesity and Overweight related causes and a few of them might even be your own peers.

If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem! I know I am right in what I am saying. I have more teachers and nurses as readers and clients than any other professions collectively. You are all "thanked" by patients, parents, administrative staff with FOOD! You know I am right and you know it is time to take a stand.

Nurses against nutritional pornography needs to be your cause, not nurses against naughty attire!

The 3 Biggest Diet Vices of Fast Food, Soft Drinks and TV--Fattening up Africa!

It is hard to believe this but now more than one-third of African women and a quarter of African men are estimated to be overweight, and the World Health Organization predicts that will rise to 41 percent and 30 percent respectively in the next 10 years.

When we picture a epidemic in Africa visions of poor starving children with swollen bellies from malnurishment come to mind, yet that is no longer the case.

“We have gone from undernutrition to overnutrition without ever having passed healthy nutrition,” said Krisela Steyn, the retired director of the South African Medical Research Council’s Chronic Disease and Lifestyle unit.

Surprisingly, the poor suffer from this more than you would think. Ironically, the poorest are often most vulnerable. Children born with low birth weights to malnourished mothers tend to be more at risk of becoming overweight as adults. They are also more prone to obesity as family members give them too much food to help them catch up, according to experts at a recent conference on chronic disease in Cape Town.

It isn't that the people of Africa are becoming overweight because they have too many fresh fruits and vegetables to eat or that water is too plentiful. It is that "modernization" has brought them Coke, Big Macs and Cable!

In Africa, as elsewhere in the world, high-fat, high-sugar fast foods, snacks and fizzy drinks are in. And, like elsewhere, growing urbanization has led to less walking and other exercise and the spread of television has led to a generation of couch potatoes rather than athletes.

Please, read the rest of this article, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15954744/ it is alarming and should be a MUST read for everyone. We have to act quickly to end our global dependence on cheap, unhealthy and obesity causing fast foods and soft drinks and increase physical activity if we hope to win our fight to end the Obesity Pandemic the world finds itself in.

My book, The Vice Busting Diet, is the ONLY "diet" book to attack the fast food and soft drink industry and directly point a finger at TV as the root causes for Obesity and to also offer a realistic and gradual solution to the problem.

I have contacted WHO and volunteered to become a Special Ambassador to help fight the Global Pandemic of Obesity. This is a fight that we must win and that with busting our vices of fast food, soft drinks and TV--we WILL win!

Flu Shot or Not: A Healthy Debate

While flu shots have become such a standard action for so many people each year, no thought seems to be given as to whether or not it is really necessary. In my opinion, the drug companies have done such a good job of lobbying and marketing the need for everyone to get their flu shots because 'it's flu season' afterall.

Here's what I do understand: people with compromised immune systems - i.e. the elderly who are already sick or suffering from a disease, or someone undergoing treatment for a disease that requires some strong drugs - are those who may actually need a flu shot. But what I don't believe is that just anyone needs a flu shot because 'it's flu season.' Do you know that people die each year from immunizations? And thousands actually get sick or the flu from getting a flu shot? I heard a radio host discussing flu shots and he didn't understand why Michael Jordan wouldn't have gotten flu shots each season since he gets paid so much to be healthy so he could play basketball. What?! Have we become that conditioned to believe everything we're told? Maybe he didn't get them because he exercises and eats healthy (and did more so them, I'm sure) - unlike 65% or more of Americans.

My point is this: if you're eating right and getting regular exercise - and supplementing your diet to be sure you're getting the nutrients you need from enough fruits and vegetables - then you don't need a flu shot. You're body is equipped with an army of enemy-fighting cells that attack anything that it knows doesn't belong - all without you even thinking about it! Yet we (that is, the drug companies whose 1st goal is profit) think that we know better how to handle the body. If more people knew how the body worked - I know very little - I think we'd be amazed and would question what if any drugs that we need.

Live healthy and you'll be healthy. Your body is not lacking anything but good nutrition. Don't deny the natural goodness that it needs.

Our Kids Our Fat, Give Them...Drugs?

Children with risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol and diabetes, are showing signs of narrowing and hardening of the arteries, conditions normally associated with adults, a study said.

An increasing number of children suffer from these and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including obesity, but testing for future heart conditions is not standard practice, according to a report presented at the annual American Heart Association meeting in Chicago.

Testing should include regular blood lipid and glucose level testing, said the report’s lead author, Sanaz Piran, a resident at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Earlier treatment could include more aggressive use of cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, she said. Read the rest of the story http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15698567/

But honestly, that was enough for me.
"Earlier treatment could include more aggressive use of cholesterol-lowering drugs!"

Here's a thought, why not have earlier treatment be getting the kids vices of FAST FOODS, soft drinks and other unhealthy foods busted AND get them exercising!?

Isn't it always the BEST or should atleast be the earliest or first step to try to get kids healthier and living healthier lifestyles than pumping them full of "more aggressive cholesterol-lowering drugs!?

What a world we live in!
"This is the first generation of children, NOT expected to outlive their parents"--Dr. David L. Katz sounded the first alarm of this dangerous prediction and Harvard concurres.

This is in most part because of their DIET and sedentary lifestyles! Dr. Katz further goes on to say that "well, they MAY live, but what quality of life remains to be seen, after all we can keep them alive with new hearts, drugs and life support."

MORE AGGRESSIVE drugs?

That's the best that the respected American Heart Association can come up with? Grow some spine, shun your big buck donating fast food and soft drink companies and tell it like it is; to save the lives of our children we MUST help them break their addication and reliance on FAST FOODS, unhealthy "JUNK" foods and sugar-filled soft drinks, sports drinks and yes, "energy" drinks! We must encourage children to consume more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats/proteins and WATER and get their bodies moving!

I almost bought my 13 year old son Clark a Glaceau "Vitamin" water after his soccer game, it was vitamin enriched after all and WATER. But thankfully I read the label. It was also sugar enriched: 2.5 servings and 50 calories per serving or 150 calories total; DUH! I could have bought him a Coke and done the same damage to his immune system, his diet and his overall health!--as my friend Dr. David L. Katz likes to say "Caveat Emptor"--Latin for buyer beware!

That is really the solution to the predicted fate of early painful fat-filled deaths that our children face!

KNOW what you are putting in your body, in the bodies of your loved ones and monitor and control (yes, we can control what our kids do!) what your children consume!

Respectfully,
Julia

Food at Work

Ok, this has to the absolute WORST story that I have ever heard about food in the workplace!

One of my clients and I were speaking on the phone today and she was telling me about her challenges in the workplace in regards to food. She is a nurse.

I have learned that nursing is a career filled with food/weight issues. It was surprising to me at first to learn this because I assumed that those giving of themselves to care for the health of others would take their own health needs very seriously. The opposite sadly is often the case.

There are indeed good reasons--stress, long hours, many hours without even a bathroom break (that would make drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day a real challenge!), the emotional toll from watching someone whom you are caring for die, and on and on. But, the worst challenge appears to be the "treats" brought to thank the nurses--by patients, doctors, administrators and other nurses.

There's a constant plethera of food in the nurses station or break room!

Another nurse (who ironically treats Eating Disorder patients) was telling me that last week, for nurse appreciation week, the hospital sent them TONS of food everyday, and nothing healthy was to be found--M&M's, donuts, cookies, cakes, pies, soda, brownies, etc.

But as bad as that might sound, because after all, we can rationize it and say the hospital administration was trying, they were at least acknowledging the good work they do (but hey, think FLOWERS or a bonus check NEXT year Mr. Hospital Administrator!)--I can't think of a worse, and this one is self-inflicted, "celebration" than this one..... (drum roll, please...)are you sufficiently teased yet?

Ok, it's really really bad...

This celebration of gluttonous excess is...

"Thunder Thigh Thursday"

Yes, you read it right.

AND it is actually arranged by and for the nurses! They set out to bring as much "bad" junk as possible and hold a gluttonious (new word?!) fest!

My clients are fighting an uphill battle! They can hold out, they can stick to their healthy resolves but geez; does it really have to be this crazy?

The first client is recently back to work in the hospital setting after spending nearly 15 years teaching Lamaze. Now she is on a maternity ward that delivers more babies than just about any hospital in the nation. She is busy the entire time that she is at work. I have her bringing a cut up protein bar in a baggie so that she can grab a quick HEALTHY bite on the run. She has lost weight since starting this new job, but it hasn't been easy.

Her boss finally gets it and doesn't offer her the treats anymore, but she feels very lonely in her desire to be healthy in the midst of so much food. I know she isn't alone. I have more nurses as readers than perhaps any other career. Here is an article about me in NurseWeek:

http://www.nurseweek.com/news/features/04-07/weightloss.asp

Despite our job, our workplace challenges or the temptations around us, we all can band together and declare a "Fit Body Friday!" Next time it's your turn to bring a treat, cut up fresh fruit to work with you and see if you can start a new trend! And, in your next evaluation--tell you boss a thank you that would really mean something to you is CASH!--not trash!

I told my nurse to think of it this way--if someone's idea of thanking you is to bring you junk, they can't really think that highly of your work. If you hold yourself higher than that, and decline the gesture, explain WHY and hold out for something more meaningful--you just may get it!

However, if you say thanks, and open the M&M's and eat them, gain weight and then bash yourself for it later...who feels appreciated? you? your boss? or the guy making M&M's. It's war folks. Obesity kills and unhealthy food fests are the bullets. We must win the war and that means you have to fight.

If you desire to see change in the world, you must first BE the change!--Ghandi

First they will laugh at you,
Then they will ignore you,
Then they will fight you,
Then YOU will win!--
Ghandi

If your boss gives you donuts, throw them at him!--Julia
