To save you some time, here are seven items that you may think are good snacks, but might be better left on the store shelf.

Comments: While this report may not the motivation for overweight future mothers to get more fit and healthy because of the actual numbers and societal groups that seem to be responsible for these numbers, it does bring to light the complications that obesity, or too much weight, brings to so many situtations. If you had to have an emergency C-section, you can imagine the difficulty there. The health of the baby should certainly be of concern. Afterall, the extra weight is a factor of too many calories and most likely too many unhealthy ones. If you are trying to conceive, or you have children, you owe it to yourself and to them to start living a healthier lifestyle. A diet full of fruits and vegetables and lean protein sources should be where most of your calories come from. And making water the beverage of choice will provide one of the easiest-to-do positive health changes in your life.

Previous studies have reported that calorie-restricted diets could prolong the lives of rodents and other short-lived species, but, until now, no such human study has been undertaken to investigate the effects of such diets on markers of human aging.

The Comprehensive Assessment of the Long Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) study, published in the new issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (Vol. 295, pp. 1539-1548), followed 48 middle-aged, overweight, non-obese men and women eating one of four calorie-controlled diets for six months.

The participants (21 men, 27 women) were randomly assigned to eat one of four diets: control (weight maintenance diet); calorie restriction (calorie intake reduced by 25 per cent of normal); calorie restriction with exercise (calorie intake reduced by 12.5 per cent, energy expenditure increased by 12.5 per cent); very low-calorie diet (890 kilocalories per day until 15 per cent weight loss and then weight maintenance diet).

Why?

First off, because we don't want to work at the solution, we want it handed to us in an easy pill or a stomach stapling operation. One woman actually asked me this week if I thought having tape worms placed in her body would be a better option than "dangerous diet pills"? We wouldn't be spending/wasting $45 Billion dollars a year on diets pills, programs and potions designed to make us thinner yet only end up getting fatter. Our Government wouldn't be spending/wasting $100 billion a year trying to fight our fight only to end up with a big fat black eye of shame. We spend $145 BILLION dollars a year trying to get into our skinny jeans and the only thing we are succeeding getting into is our coffins prematurely at a staggering rate of 300,000 deaths a year directly related to Obesity and another 2.6 million people it contributed to their early deaths.

I think the time as come to ask ourselves honestly do you want to Big Mac or do you want to die early? I think the "do you want fries with that?" question should be banned from the face of the earth and the question of "do you want to be buried or cremated?" should replace it. Let the government mandate THAT if they want to do any good or see a return on their $100 billion dollar a year investment.

Rather than allowing McDonald's to voice their freedom of speech showing fit, healthy and trim people "Lovin' It!" I think the government should force McDonald's to show THIS

picture in their ads and then, do you think Ronald McDonald really has the balls to declare "I'm Lovin' it!" under the obese kids picture?

What if the governement forced Coca-Cola to put a warning label on the side of every can of their high-fructose corn syrup laced poison: "Warning, consumption of just ONE of these a day will put 15 pounds a year on your ass". Ok "bottom" or "thighs" Ok, maybe I don't have to be vulgar to get my point across but when you are fighting ads like this being extreme gets your attention:

This year’s report, for the first time, looked at rates of overweight children ages 10 to 17. The District of Columbia had the highest percentage — 22.8 percent. Utah had the lowest — 8.5 percent.

Start by writing down your goals, no matter how outrageous they may seem, write it down.  You need goals and dreams that could take you a lifetime to accomplish.  Make sure they are meaningful so that when you read them and ponder their reality, you feel the motivation to get there.  When you can get to that point, you have reached significant goals and dreams for yourself!

Third.  Be sure your daily plan includes at least one action that moves you closer to your long-term goals.  If your daily actions only include those things you are now doing, then you keep getting what you have gotten.  It's time to broaden your horizons by moving outside of your current comfort zone and doing something new, something different.  By the end of the week, you should feel that you have moved a little closer to your dreams.  It may not seem like much in the beginning, but if you just focus on doing a little each day, in only 1 year, you will feel more and more compelled to seeing your dreams become a reality.  So be sure you are writing down and doing at least one task each day toward that reality.

Four.  Don't look back at where you've been, only where you want to go! This goes right in line with having a daily plan.  There's no time to look back at any tragedies, or mishaps, or unhappy times. only time to create new memories, new experiences, and happy times.  With your plan you are creating those things, and not leaving yourself time to ponder the "what ifs" of the past.  Ask yourself "How can I" instead...."How can I improve my  job".OR.." How can I be a better spouse?"..OR.."How can I reach my goals?"..OR how about.  "How can I improve world peace?"...OR even  "How can I help others be happy too!?"... Look to what contributions you can make for yourself and for others, today and tomorrow!  In this way, you will keep looking ahead.  Remember, no matter how tarnished your past, your future is spotless!

Five.  Leave excuses behind.  There are many reasons we have for not having what we want in life.  It's not hard to find someone who can talk about the "tough times" and how rough things are, or how difficult the boss is.  But guess what?  Everyone has hurdles to overcome, and these hurdles can be the excuses that hold you back, or the obstacle that you have to jump over that will make you stronger and more prepared for the next one.  This goes along with leaving the past behind you, where it will always stay.  Excuses are nothing more than seeing the difficulty ahead, instead of seeing beyond it to where you would rather be.  The hurdle has to be there in order for you to gain a sense of fulfillment for having overcome it to reach your goals!

The sixth key to a healthy lifestyle is to take full responsibility.  Really when it comes down to it, ultimately YOU are the only one who can make things happen for you.  That means YOU are the one who has to make the plan, YOU are the one who needs to perform the exercises each day, and YOU are the one who will overcome the hurdles to reach your goals.  Now many others and I can be cheerleaders and coaches to try to steer you in the right direction and cheer you on, but it is your game.  And if your not playing the game, you may just be in the stands watching others as they try to win at their goals.  If you find yourself always looking to others that have what you want, you may be living in the stands. Start taking responsibility by taking action toward achieving those things you want.

Seven. Be aware of people or things that can divert your focus from your goals.  Does this mean ignore others and the help they may need?  Certainly not.  But realize that very often someone may approach you or want you to do something that is not really in the best interest of your health and your goals.  Sometimes, when we say "no," we are really just saying yes to "sticking to" what's good and healthy.  You will not only be empowering yourself to make the right decision, but also letting others know that your focus on living a healthy lifestyle is in their  best interest too, and maybe it will rub off on them.  Say "no" to the so-called "water cooler" conversations at work that don't provide any productive outcome, just harm to those participating..OR "no" to the box of donuts that seem to show up at work in the morning, for what seems to be harmless socializing and eating with co-workers.  Ask yourself if it's taking your attention away from building a healthy lifestyle or making a contribution to such lifestyle.  Be like the race horses with blinders on that can only see ahead… and choose to only see what's healthy -  healthy for you, for your family, for the company you may work for.  It may seem like you are alienating yourself, and you are from what's not healthy.  It's not easy taking the high road, but you'll be much happier in the long run.

Number eight.  Decide where you would like to be 20 years from now.  Are you doing what you are doing now, only looking older?  Or can you see from the goals and dreams you have written, that you are carving out a new person, who has had many new experiences.  If you can visualize what your life will be in 20 years - where you will live, the places you will have visited, the people you have come to know, the knowledge that you have gained, the positive changes that you have made for yourself and others -  you will really begin to see the potential that the years ahead can bring.  Now I'm not suggesting that everything will be exactly as you may envision.  But it will give you a sense of what you truly are capable of, and what you can look forward to.  Both things that will motivate you to keep moving in the right direction!

Nine. Surround yourself with other positive people.  If you are in a support group for weight loss, that's good, so long as you're not around the people that only want to talk about how hard it is.  You want positive energy on your side, and the more you have and the more positive energy you give, the stronger you will be.  You see, being around someone who shares the same desire to live healthy does not increase the amount of good twofold, it increases it tenfold.  You will feed off of each other's similar goals and desires, and share things that have helped each of you.  My husband use to compete in triathlons-- where they swim a few hundred yards, then ride their bike several miles, then run a few miles.  Some people actually find this pleasurable! I asked him how he managed to complete such an event.  His response was "If it wasn't for all those other people pushing to get to the finish line, I may not have."  How true that is for us in our lives.  If we are around people that are pushing to reach their long-term goals, then we are more apt to reaching ours.  Find those people and stick with them!

Ten.  Learn to love exercise and all physical activities.  There are so many forms of exercise and physical activity and so many ways to enjoy them, that you should not have any reasons not to do so.  How many different places are there that you can enjoy taking a walk? - The park, a museum, downtown, window-shopping in a mall, in your neighborhood, and many more. How about the different types of exercise besides walking - riding a bike, playing tennis or racquetball, lifting weights, jogging, kick boxing, aerobics, yoga, jazzercising, dancing, gardening, cutting the grass, painting. If you have trouble exercising, try doing a stationary bike if you can.  It's the easiest piece of equipment to use that you can use.  The BEST is an elliptical machine, I use a PreCor machine and it is amazing! Try different activities and exercises and find what you can really enjoy. Remember, these are the things that you want to be doing for the rest of your life.
