More than half of women who die after having a child are overweight, as the obesity epidemic drives up the death rate among new mothers, according to a report. Almost 300 women died after having children between 2003-05, according to new figures.
And about 40 per cent of the deaths were avoidable, the Confidential Inquiry into Maternal and Child Health (Cemach) report will say.The Cemach report criticises poor standards of care in maternity units, with healthcare workers unable to identify common complications or manage emergencies effectively, and junior staff being left in charge too often.

The report comes as campaigners warn that maternity services are in their worst state for 40 years. Where possible, obese women should be helped to lose weight prior to conception or any form of assisted reproduction," the report says.

Comments: While this report may not the motivation for overweight future mothers to get more fit and healthy because of the actual numbers and societal groups that seem to be responsible for these numbers, it does bring to light the complications that obesity, or too much weight, brings to so many situtations. If you had to have an emergency C-section, you can imagine the difficulty there. The health of the baby should certainly be of concern. Afterall, the extra weight is a factor of too many calories and most likely too many unhealthy ones. If you are trying to conceive, or you have children, you owe it to yourself and to them to start living a healthier lifestyle. A diet full of fruits and vegetables and lean protein sources should be where most of your calories come from. And making water the beverage of choice will provide one of the easiest-to-do positive health changes in your life.
