The trend is a way for hospitals to increase revenue from sources other than insurance and government health plans and to expand care outside the hospital, said Gary Paquin, executive vice president of The Paquin Group, a health care retail consultant firm based in Celebration, Fla. Read more...

Comments: This could be conservatively speaking, good news, for patients. With hospitals looking for new sources of revenue, and offering other 'products' that are not covered by insurance, it is possible that hospitals may start considering not only products, but services that aren't covered, knowing that patients are going elsewhere to get them. Indirectly, this could lead to alternate forms of care that traditional medicine has long 'not believed' in - massage, nutritional intervention, etc. The downside is that the competitive nature of health care may lead to less quality of products and services that would otherwise be found at a care giver's practice whom knows the products or services much better than a hospital ever could. Either way, it may start opening the way for true "health" care, rather than 'sick' care that is tied to medicines, surgeries, and protocols that don't look at the 'whole' person - what many would refer to as wholistic care. This may be a stretch, but it could be heading that way.
