Researchers Warn of High Sugar in Fruit Juices

ELEANOR HALL: For years parents have been told that soft drinks rot their children's teeth and make them fat, while a glass of orange juice in the morning is a healthy way to start the day.

Now Victorian researchers have thrown a spanner in the works, linking fruit juice to obesity in children.

JANE COWAN: Deakin University's Andrea Sanigorski is the bearer of bad news for parents who've been giving their children fruit juice, thinking it's a healthy alternative to soft drink.

ANDREA SANIGORSKI: In primary school children that we looked at, soft drinks weren't consumed as regularly in large amounts whereas the sweet drinks that were fruit based or cordial based, we're being drunk a lot by children very regularly.

When you look at both of those, when you get to the highest level, where children are drinking three and four glasses a day, which is 750 mls to a litre, those children were two times as likely to be overweight or obese.

JANE COWAN: Is it fruit based drinks that are the problem or fruit juices?

ANDREA SANIGORSKI: Basically it's any sugar sweetened drink or any sweet drink, even if they're based on pure fruit, they are a concentrated form of sugar.

JANE COWAN: You're not suggesting though that fruit juice is as bad as soft drink are you?
